Is financial assistance available to help pay examination fees?

The Commission does not provide financial assistance for examination fees. Candidates enrolled in a preparation program may wish to contact their program to inquire if financial aid might be available to help pay examination fees.

Can passing one or more of the subtests or sections of any examination be waived?

Candidates must pass an examination in its entirety, including all subtests or sections. There is no waiver of the passing requirement, regardless of how close a non-passing score might have come to meeting the passing score standard established by the Commission for each examination.

How many questions are on the test?

Alternative Testing Arrangements

Can I get extra time for my test?

The test session is designed to allow sufficient time to complete the test. Examinees may find the allotted testing time to be more than enough to complete the test, even if they have needed extra time on other tests they have taken in the past.

If, however, you have a documented disability and you feel you need extra time for testing, you may submit a request for alternative testing arrangements when you register for the test.

How do I request alternative testing arrangements due to a physical disability?

How can I test on a day other than Saturday due to my religious practices?

Alternative test dates may be arranged for examinees who are registering for paper-based testing and whose religious practices do not allow them to take tests on Saturdays. To review instructions on requesting testing on alternative dates and a list of available testing locations, select the PBT tab on the Request Alternative Testing Arrangements page.

Day of the Test

When do I report for my test?

Review the information provided on the day of the test under "Reporting to the Test Center."

What kind of ID do I need to be admitted to the test center?

For all tests, you must bring identification as described in the identification policy to the test center on the day of your test.

I was absent from the test. Can I get a refund?

Read the absentee policy.

May I bring scratch paper to the test center?

All handwritten or printed materials, such as dictionaries, notebooks, scratch paper, and textbooks, are prohibited from the test center. For computer-based testing a pen and a booklet of erasable sheets will be provided and for paper-based testing the test booklet(s) may be used for taking notes, writing an outline, or otherwise preparing your response.

Who receives my test results?

Your test results are reported to you, the CTC, and the institution(s) that you indicated when you registered; and to any other institution, entity, or person authorized or required by law to receive this information.

What is the minimum passing score?

May I request that my score be verified?

Do my scores expire?

Passing scores must be applied toward California certification within five (5) years of the test date or submission deadline.

  • CBEST: Once the entire test has been passed, it need never be taken again to qualify for the issuance or renewal of any credential in the future.

How do I get additional copies of past test results?

If it has been more than two (2) years since the test results release date, you may request additional copies of your test results by submitting a completed Test Results Request Form with correct payment to Evaluation Systems. If you took the RICA-Video Performance Assessment, and it has been more than forty-five (45) days since the test results release date, you may also request additional copies of your test results. To update your name or Social Security number, contact Evaluation Systems. You can manage your account when it is convenient for you to do so, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
